Behcet's Disease

Behcet's Disease is rare disease associated with chronic inflammation of blood vessels. The disease is more common with people between 20s and 30s. Cases of children and adults having Behcet's Disease, though uncommon but not absent all together. Behcet's Disease is usually common in countries like China, Japan, Iran and those in the Middle East.

Causes of Behcet's Disease:

The causes of Behcet's Disease is yet to be discovered. Many doctors are of opinion that the disease is a type of autoimmune disorder, which destroys the immune system of the body. In case of autoimmune disorder, the healthy cells of the body are destroyed.

Researches have revealed that Behcet's Disease can be due to various genetical factors. Such disease may also result due to environmental factors like presence of heavy metals and chemicals.

Symptoms of Behcet's Disease:

The symptoms of the disease vary according to patients and body parts affected.
  • If skin is affected, lesions are evident. Sores may appear and skin tends to become red.
  • Inflammation in eye is the most common symptom if eye is affected. Pain in one or both the eyes, redness of eye and blurred vision are the other symptoms.
  • Swelling of joints, tremendous pain in elbow, wrist and ankle are the common symptoms if joint is affected.

  • Sores in mouth, lesions around lips may become prominent if the mouth is affected by Behcet's Disease.
  • Headache, fever, strokes may occur if Behcet's Syndrome affects the brain.
  • If the patient is suffering from Diarrhea, abdominal pain or bleeding then the patient's digestive system may get infected.
Diagnosis of Behcet's Disease:

Doctors usually depend on the symptoms for diagnosis in absence of proper medical tests, which may diagnose the disease. Inflammation of eye, sores in skin and genital sores are the most common symptoms of the disease. Sometimes Positive Pathergy Tests are conducted for confirmation. During such test a sterile needle is inserted in the affected area and further examinations are conducted after two days. If a bump is seen in the area where the needle was inserted then the result is positive and the Behcet's Disease is confirmed.

Treatment of Behcet's Disease:

Treatment is done according to the area affected by the disease. Skin creams, gel and ointments are prescribed for skin problems. Corticosteroids like prednisone are recommended for Behcet's Disease. Medication is highly effective since they help in the normalization and regulation of immune system.
