Osteogenesis Imperfecta

Better known as Brittle Bone Disease, Osteogenesis Imperfecta is one of the most prominent forms of genetic arthritis diseases. Osteogenesis Imperfecta can attack a human being at a very early age. Since the disease is genetic, one can also be affected with Osteogenesis Imperfecta at a pre natal stage. If there is an abnormality in the type 1 collagen in the human body, a child can suffer from Osteogenesis Imperfecta.

Symptoms of Osteogenesis Imperfecta

The symptoms for Osteogenesis Imperfecta differ from one stage to the other. If a child is suffering from Osteogenesis Imperfecta, he is usually born with blue sclera. Sclera or the white portion of the eye, undergoes a severe discoloration during Osteogenesis Imperfecta.

Besides, bone fractures are common at early age, but gradually decreases with age. Patients of Osteogenesis Imperfecta can suffer from a fractured bone even after a mild injury. Hence special care has to be taken and injuries of all kinds must be avoided. As one grows up, genetic Osteogenesis Imperfecta can even result into partial or complete hearing loss.

Type 2 Osteogenesis Imperfecta often results into bone fractures in the new born baby,. Some babies suffering from Osteogenesis Imperfecta, can be even born with a broken jaw, or a broken nose. The type 3 Osteogenesis Imperfecta usually results into broken limbs soon after birth.
Some children may even suffer from a breakage of the bones, even during child birth. The brittle bones of these babies fail to support them for long. Hence a child affected with type 3 Osteogenesis Imperfecta can easily suffer from an abnormality ion the facial features or a gradual shortening of the limbs. A progressive degeneration of the bones is also a prominent symptom at an advanced stage.

Treatment of Osteogenesis Imperfecta

Osteogenesis Imperfecta has no effective cure. Since the diseases is genetic operation and surgical treatment may not be useful.
For the bones are already fragile and application of surgical tools on the bones will only make them more brittle.

Parents with a Osteogenesis Imperfect kid must know how to handle the baby. They must teach the bay to adopt such postures which can cause least amount of injuries or accidents. Special shoes and braces for the legs may be introduced to children who are learning to walk. There is no possible medication for Osteogenesis Imperfecta. However, proper genetic counseling can prove to be a possible treatment for Osteogenesis Imperfecta.
