Osteonecrosis

Osteonecrosis is a kind of disease that can affect you body joints in various ways. In the disease due to lack of blood some of the bone tissues die that eventually result into collapsing of bones. In most of the cases when the bones are situated near a body joint they lead to a bone collapses well as collapse of the joint. If you have Osteonecrosis it is better to take required action promptly in order to avoid further problems.

What is Osteonecrosis?

Osteonecrosis is a kind of disease that results from lack of blood supply in the bones. Due to less or no blood supply the bone tissues start dying and later it results into bone collapse. In case that blood is not reaching a bone near a joint, the joint too can get affected. The joint surface might also collapse overtime. Osteonecrosis is also known under some other names. The names include avascular necrosis, aseptic necrosis and ischemic necrosis. Though Osteonecrosis can affect any kind of bones it generally affects the ends of the bone that extends from the knee joint to hip joint. This bone is known as femur. Upper arm bones, knees, shoulders and ankles are also likely to get affected.

Causes of Osteonecrosis

Osteonecrosis can be caused by temporary or permanent lack of blood supply to the bone tissues. There are however, some external causes of this disease as well. These external cause include consumption of steroid medicine, alcohol, injury, radiation therapy and organ transplantation.

Symptoms of Osteonecrosis

You might not have any symptoms of Osteonecrosis when you are in the first stage of the disease. But gradually as the disease progresses you can experience some joint pains. At first the pain will be felt at the time when you lift weight and gradually the pain will increase. At times you might also feel extreme pain that can limit the movement of the joint.

Treatments of Osteonecrosis
Osteonecrosis can be treated in many ways. But the treatment should be chosen depending on the age of the patient, the stage of the disease, the location of the affected bone and the cause of Osteonecrosis.

You can go for the nonsurgical treatments of Osteonecrosis which includes medication, electrical stimulation. Range of motion exercising and reduction of weight bearing. You can choose any of these treatments or can go for a combination of two or more of these treatments. The surgical treatments of Osteonecrosis includes core decompression, osteotomy, bone graft and anthroplasty or total joint replacement. Before going for any such treatments, consulting your physician is a must.

If you can diagnose Osteonecrosis at an early stage you can get rid of it quickly and without surgeries. In extreme cases, however, Osteonecrosis are the only treatments for it. To know more about other types of arthritis keep reading arthritisxl.com.
