Polymyositis and Dermatomyositis

People always try to be fit but often fall victims to different types of physical diseases. There are various factors that encourage disease to creep in the body. Malfunctioning of immune system is one of the major encouraging factors for several physical diseases and specially those which affect the bones, joints, cartilages and the muscles. Polymyositis and Dermatomyositsis are two most common diseases that creep in the body of the people having a weak immune system. Polymyositis and Dermatomyositis are critical diseases that may cause pose serious threat to the body.

While mentioning about Polymyositis and Dermatomyositis it has to be said that the term Dermatomyositis refers to the later stage of the disease. The actual name of the disease is Polymyositis. It is disease that occurs in the body muscles of an individual and makes them weak. Polymyositis leads to inflammation of the muscle fibers and thus loose their strength to help people in performing their normal physical activities. If a person suffers from Polymyositis for a long time his or her body muscle can get smaller which can be very fatal. Polymyositis generally affects the muscles close to the trunk. It is a chronic disease and slowly damages the body muscles and causes severe physical weakness.

If the disease is not treated in the early stage, it starts affecting the skin also, and thus it is called Dermatomyositis. Rashes appear on the skin and are commonly seen on face, neck, chest and scalp. In severe cases, rashes appear on hands, fingers, knees, elbows, thighs, upper arms and elbows too. At the early stage the rashes look red but slowly turns purple and the skin of the affected areas is raised slightly. People also suffer from problems like difficulty in swallowing, coughing and shortness of breath. Weakness and pain in the muscles, joint pain and problems in the heart and lung are the most common symptoms of Polymyositis and Dermatomyositis.
As an effect of Polymyositis and Dermatomyositis, people find difficulty while getting dressed, combing their hair and lifting heavy objects. If the disease occurs in the muscles of neck, chest and abdomen people might find it difficult to lift their body from the bed.

One must not forget to mention about treatments of Polymyositis and Dermatomyositis. The worst part is that these diseases are incurable but medicines are available that can provide relief to people from their sufferings. High doses of corticosteroids works very well on patients of Polymyositis and Dermatomyositis.
