Pseudogout

Pseudogout is associated with painful joints in several parts of the body. Common to the knee joints, Pseudogout usually affects a man in his old age. In Pseudogout, a severe pain in the joints may be followed by crystals along the lining of the joint. Although the preliminary symptoms are like gout, Pseudogout can have severe implications if left untreated.

The bigger joints in the arms and the legs can get affected by Pseudogout. Calcium pyrophosphate dehydrate is responsible for causing the various kinds of crystals on the joints. Most of the medical practitioners across the world are still not sure of the exact causes and reasons for Pseudogout. Better medical research in near future, can bring about significant development in the field of Pseudogout.

Causes of Pseudogout

With the collection of Calcium pyrophosphate dehydrate crystals in the joint linings, chances of Pseudogout increases to a greater extent. Prolonged period of this collection can lead the crystals to migrate to the synovium. After the crystals have passed on to the synovium there is a significant swelling of the muscles and the joints.

Chronic pain is often accompanied with jamming in the affected area. However, collection of crystals in the joints may not always result into Pseudogout. The reason as to why Pseudogout is common to some people and not in others is not yet known.

Symptoms of Pseudogout

Most instances of Pseudogout are found in the knees. But one can also suffer from Pseudogout in the shoulders, ankles, hands, wrists and elbows. A pain in the joints is the most common symptom for Pseudogout. A swelling of the joints along with pain in limb movement are also quite common. Those who are suffering from Pseudogout in the knees, find it difficult to make sudden changes in postures.

If one is affected with Pseudogout in the shoulders, he can face difficulties in making side movements. People suffering from Pseudogout in the shoulders are also forbidden to carry heavy objects.

An instance of Pseudogout in the knees usually consist of swelling and reddening of the affected area. Swift arm movements become difficult and patients often lose the power to grasp.

Usually the affected joint remains warm even when there is no limb movement whatsoever. Along with swelling there may be frequent session of jamming of the joins. Under such conditions one finds it difficult to make simple limb movements. Medication for Pseudogout includes special medication coupled with proper exercise and physiotherapies.
