According to World Health organization rheumatic diseases are defined as "Disorders of connective tissue, especially the joints and related structures, characterized by inflammation, degeneration, or metabolic derangement."

The term rheumatic diseases are used to describe number of diseases related to bones and joints. However, there are specific terms for every rheumatic disorder characterized by different kind of symptoms. For example, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, Lyme Disease , gout and so on.

Although the causes and symptoms of the each of the disease are different, but there are some common characteristics associated with rheumatic diseases. The common feature is the inflammation of the joints, ligaments or the tendons resulting in the pain, swelling and stiffness in different parts of the body.

Causes of Rheumatic Disease

Different reasons are behind different kinds of rheumatic diseases. While in some cases old age and hormonal disorders are the primary reasons, in other cases there can be hereditary reason or infection of virus and bacterias.
