Weak immune system

The most important function of immune system is its defensive role in the human body. The immune system has an inherent ability to detect and challenge foreign substances and organisms within the body, acting as the crucial first line of defense. It is therefore a totally independent and invisible shield, working unnoticed in our bodies and bringing attention to itself only when we get sick; we are otherwise unaware of its existence.

But it must be mentioned here that the onset of an illness is by itself, not an indication of weak immune system, it can also be due to the effects of recurring and lasting infections in the body. A permanent and constant fatigue in the body, the presence of swelling in the glands, the occurrence of colds and sore throats in a person are the more specific signs of a weakened immune system.

A full and professional diagnosis of the condition must be taken in consultation with a medical practitioner, when and if such symptoms become aggravated and if they come accompanied by weakness or weight loss in the individual. Under the weak immune system a person often has a high chance to get flu, insomnia and other diseases.

If our immune system is maintained at optimum level,our incidence of disease is less, and we are less likely to develop abnormal cell growths. Also, when we do become ill or have a physical injury, a healthy immune system can ensure the fastest possible recovery. In some serious cases, for example with cancer, immune system strength can literally mean the difference between life and death. Without a healthy immune system, the body and mind languish in a state of ill health, greatly prolonging the journey back to vitality.

While the organization and function of the immune system is well defined and complex, its impairment can often be brought about quite easily and quickly by a variety of simple factors and circumstances in the body. These factors can very easily lead to a weak immune system and expose the individual to a plethora of debilitating conditions. Some of the very usual and easily identifiable underlying causes are the presence of excessive physical and or emotional stress in the person; this also includes depression, chronic or otherwise. Recovery from illness if furthered hampered by the presence in the body of a chronic or lingering illness, especially due to severe conditions, and physical trauma from surgery, all these factors can leave the resources of the immune system depleted and it may find it difficult to cope.


This necessarily is not conducive to a healthy and quick convalescence. The normal functioning and operation of the immune system can also be severely hampered by the regular intake of a diet deficient in nutrients and inadequate in important compounds. The greatest long term harm is often dealt to the body by the regular intake of empty calories, this low caloric compounds are abundant in many processed foods and sweets; such a diet needless to say is poor in nutritional value. The other important contributing factors are conditions such as obesity in people, a generally poor physical condition or fitness level and prolonged periods of inactivity or sedentary habits

The immune system has a series of dual natures, the most important of which is self or non-self recognition. The others are general or specific, natural or adaptive,innate or acquired, cell-mediated or humoral, active or passive, primary or secondary. Parts of the immune system are antigen-specific they recognize and act against particular antigens, systemic and have memory which recognize and mount an even stronger attack to the same antigen the next time. Sometimes weak immune system can lead to risk factors for Arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) occurs as a result of your immune system causing inflammation of the lining of a joint and the tissues surrounding it

There are several factors can make a weak immune system in our bodies:

The first is poor nutrition. The modern diet is depleted of many of the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other nutritive factors that are essential to the body to maintain a healthy immune system. The immune system leads to optimum nutrition in our diets in order to function well. If just a few vitamins or minerals vital to its processes are not available in adequate amounts, our immune system will be compromised.

A polluted environment: as our environment becomes more polluted, our bodies have to cope with a greater "toxic load".This comes into the body through the food we eat, our lungs and our skin, and also from over exposure to sunlight and electrical equipment. When the toxic load rises, the immune system has to work harder to identify and detoxify these pollutants — lowering its efficiency.

Stress: A severe stress in our day to day lives can also lead to weak immune system. when we are stressed, evolution has designed our bodies to get ready for action by diverting all resources to the muscles. Bodily functions considered unnecessary in an emergency situation are temporarily closed down such as digestion, repair mechanisms and immune function.

Drugs:Both medicinal and recreational drugs can substantially lead to weak immune system. For example, antibiotics destroy the healthy bacteria in our stomachs which are essential for healthy digestion. Immune system depletion is also an unfortunate side-effect of some of today's modern treatments.
